Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, I believe that every student can succeed in learning the language. It is my mission to empower students to achieve success. To educate is simply to enable students, and give them the tools to strive for success in their academic performance. 

Eclectic Approach 

In my teachings, I employ an eclectic teaching style to engage students in performing communicative tasks and activities. I don't adhere to one method. I believe that each method can be beneficial to a learner and can be utilized to hone language skills.  In my teachings, I take inspiration from grammar-translation, audio-lingual, Suggestopedia, and TPR  to design a student-centered class.

Technology Use  

Interactive technology offers deeper engagement. Therefore, I utilize educational technologies such as SMART Notebook, Kahoot, Linoit, and Nearpod to deliver the objectives of the lesson. I believe interactive technology creates a safe learning environment for the students to learn and receive immediate feedback without putting them on the spot. 

I design the activities carefully to utilize students' strengths to address areas needing improvement. To help students make sense of new information, I employ differentiated instruction. While the material is the same, each student will receive different activities and tasks designed to employ his or her strength to address deficiencies. For example, a student who knows the vocabulary can utilize his or her knowledge to learn grammar. A student who performs well in listening comprehension can utilize their strength to improve transcription.  

Elements

I believe that are five essential elements that are conducive to this teaching approach. (1) I will design a student-centered class. (2) I will activate the background knowledge of students (3) I will provide my students with level-appropriate authentic materials. (4) I will scaffold the materials utilizing a variety of activities and tasks. (5) I will incorporate the needed technology to create a safe learning environment. 

Teaching Style

My teaching style is inspired by the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. As a teacher, I engage students in performing communicative activities and tasks, with the objective of creating a student-centered class. I embed these activities throughout the different phases of the lesson. At the activation of the schemata stage, I engage students in pair work to discuss with their partner a group of pictures that I presented or a silent video that I showed to prompt discussion. 

When I present new information to the class, I design this phase carefully to include a role for the students. Thus, the presentation will not teacher-centered. Instead, I co-present with my students. 

Then, I will scaffold the materials through several activities that run the gamut from guessing the meaning of the new vocab from context, matching games, sorting out, ranking, analyzing, inferring, and concluding.
